Balenciaga to Part Ways with Alexander Wang

After almost 3 years in charge of the iconic label established by fashion great Cristobal Balenciaga, it is understood via industry sources that Balenciaga and its holding company Kering had decided not to renew Wang’s contract and his last collection for the house would be unveiled during Paris Fashion Week from 29 September to 7 October.

Wang is one of the most successful American designers of his generation, amongst the ranks that includes Jason Wu who now helms BOSS Womenswear, Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim, Born in California to Taiwanese parents, he launched his eponymous label – a mix of relaxed chic and streetwise edge – in 2007 when he was just 23.

His arrival at Balenciaga in late 2012 followed the departure of Nicolas Ghesquiere, who was in place for 15 years before moving and now helms Louis Vuitton as womenswear creative director. What probably doomed Wang was that he failed to re-energise Balenciaga to the extent that Ghesquire did at Louis Vuitton, Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent (exceptionally so) and worse, Michele at Gucci who has registered an uptick in an even shorter time.
