“I’m too busy”, “It’s awkward and uncomfortable,” and “I’m afraid of the consequences” are all common reasons why a large number of men tend to skip out on regular health check-ups, such as a urology consultations or check-ups on their prostate health. But according to the experts at Valiant Clinic, like most other health-related problems, prevention is often better than – or at least a huge factor in the success of – a cure, and men’s health issues are no different. Which is why they’re offering complimentary urology consultations to men in the UAE in honour of Men’s Health Week, which runs from the 11th to the 17th of June.

So what exactly does it mean, for a man to be in good health? Valiant Clinic’s experts refer to a state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing as experienced by men, and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity. These often relate to structures such as male reproductive organs, or conditions caused by hormones specific to men. Testicular cancer, infertility, andropause, prostate cancer, erectile disfunction and prostate enlargement may all affect men at any age.

More common than many people realise, testicular cancer typically affects younger men, with a higher rate of incidence between the ages of 15 and 45. Both regular self-exams and urological consultations, along with a healthy lifestyle, can help prevent this problem, or allow those affected to recognize it early enough for successful treatment.

Infertility and hormonal issues are often correlated each. Men are advised to undergo regular examinations from infancy and throughout their lifetime, in order to help recognize and conditions such as hypospadias, cryptorchidism (known also as “undescended testes”), varicocele, hypogonadism. As simple as they may seem, blood tests are recommended in cases of chronic fatigue, low libido, depression and anxiety, and to investigate testosterone drop and andropause. Prolonged stress is another growing issue that plays a big role in men’s overall health – particularly for those in their 40’s – affecting their heart and nervous system, as well as their mental health.

Prostate cancer is the second-most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, with an estimated 1.1 million diagnoses worldwide, accounting for 15% of all cancers diagnosed. Family history and racial/ethnic background are often associated with an increase in the incidence of prostate cancer, suggesting a genetic predisposition. In order to help prevent its onset, regular blood tests and physical examinations are highly recommended. Prostatic-specific antigen (PSA) screening is recommended starting from the age of 50 or after 45 among Afro Americans, and in case of familiarity. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate gland enlarges. This condition starts in men in their 50’s and affects up to 80% of men over the age of 80. While the condition is not cancerous, the symptoms can be very uncomfortable, affecting the ability to urinate properly. If not kept under close medical watch, the condition can become very dangerous.

Finally, erectile dysfunction may affect men at any age. This difficulty in obtaining and maintaining an erection can indicate a more serious health issue. Diabetes, high blood pressure, hardening of arteries or disturbed blood flow are all possibilities, and should be investigated.

With Father’s Day also approaching soon after Men’s Health week comes to an end, what better time is there to raise awareness of, or to personally take more responsibility for an action towards, the most pressing health issues that affect men worldwide? Whether it’s for yourself, or your son, father, brother, friend, or even your husband, it’s time to step in for a check-up and take better care of men’s health issues.
