When fashion meets art. The artist and designer Azzedine Alaïa together with Galleria Borghese present “Couture/Sculpture: Azzedine Alaïa in the History of Fashion”

The Galleria Borghese museum in Rome is a haven for tourists, art historians and those who have a special interest in the classical world, but from now until October it is also of interest to followers of the world of fashion as Azzedine Alaïa unveils his new exhibition – Couture/Sculpture: Azzedine Alaïa in the History of Fashion.

Among the world renowned artistic and sculptural treasures on display in the museum, are 65 show-stopping designs by Alaïa, respectfully but not apologetically blending into the honourable surroundings. A bandage dress, accompanies the exhibits of the Egyptian room, referencing the tradition of mummification, and Grecian designs flank statues from Greek antiquity.

The exhibition has a focus on his work that’s more reminiscent of sculpture than fashion design itself.

“This is what all of Alaïa’s work aspires to silhouettes worn by ideal women that can “crack” the heart of men. This shows how he holds up with old masters, it’s very clear and very simple…”  – said Mark Wilson, the exhibit’s curator and friend of Alaïa. Adding: “I don’t even consider him a fashion person, He is an artist.”
